Library Instruction and Research Assistance for Your Students
Library Instruction Options for Faculty
- Librarians can provide instruction by
- visiting your class – online, hybrid, or face-to-face,
- being "embedded" in your course, and/or
- meeting with your students - one-on-one or a large or small group.
- Librarians can create a custom guide for your course by mapping your course content with our online and physical resources and instructional materials. We invite you to

- Librarians are available to assist with research and reference questions through several modalities:
- in-person assistance in the library,
- virtually via chat, SMS/text, or email,
- video conferencing via Zoom, and/or
- by appointment with a Subject Librarian for in-depth assistance.

Request Library Instruction
To request library instruction for your in-person, online, and/or hybrid class, please complete the online request form.
Instruction may be delivered face-to-face or online, synchronous or asynchronous, or via custom course resources, and in one or multiple sessions throughout the semester. In an online or hybrid scenario, the librarian can be embedded into your Blackboard course to facilitate student-librarian interaction and enable integration of the library's instructional materials.
Please submit the request at least two weeks in advance of the planned instruction date. Note that custom resources may take longer than two weeks to develop. After receipt of the form, the Instruction Librarian will contact you to finalize the details.
This program provides free, personalized research assistance for students working on a thesis or dissertation.
Tours and Workshops
Tours of the library building can be scheduled by request, as can workshops on specific or disciplinary databases, citation managers (EndNote, Zotero, Mendeley), and similar resources. Please submit a Tour Request Form or contact the Instruction Librarian with questions.
Placing Materials on Reserve
Faculty members are encouraged to place print or electronic materials on reserve for their students to improve availability for course use. Materials placed on print reserves may include personally owned books, photocopies (with copyright restrictions), and books owned by the library. Materials for electronic reserves may include journal articles or book chapters scanned from print, links to electronic journal articles, other internet sources (with copyright restrictions), and e-books owned by the library.
Complete the Reserves Request Form online, then (if applicable) deliver to the Library any personal books, article copies, etc.
The electronic reserve system is available 24/7 from home or campus, and course reserves can even be embedded directly into Blackboard.
To renew an existing course for another semester, complete the Renew My E-Reserves form online.
For new course requests, Complete the E-Reserves Request Form online. The form will be sent to the Reserves Supervisor for processing; when needed, library personnel will contact copyright owners and request permission to place materials on reserve. Faculty teaching off-campus courses or online courses will find Electronic Reserves an especially useful way of providing access to readings. The process to set up a course can take some time, depending on the number of readings or whether permissions requests are required, so please allow 2 - 3 weeks for processing. Library personnel may need to borrow a clean copy of print material to be digitized.

Faculty may encourage Distance Learning students to make use of the Library's Distance Learning Services. Eligibility is limited to students who are both enrolled in SHSU off-campus courses only and who live outside Walker County; these services are not available to students who take one or more courses on the SHSU campus or persons not affiliated with SHSU. Consult with a Librarian
Contact the Library Service Desk for information about using the Library or for help in navigating the Library's electronic resources. Need assistance in your office? A librarian will show you how to use electronic databases; find full text journal articles; stay current with the latest electronic resource acquired by the library; and search the web effectively.
Subject librarians also work with faculty to develop a collection of materials that supports the curriculum and research activities.
Scholarly Publishing and Metrics Services
The Library can provide support in many aspects of the scholarly communication cycle, including data management planning and data sharing, selecting high-quality journals for manuscript submission, copyright and publishing contracts, indicators of research impact, creating and maintaining a scholarly identity online, and more. Faculty>Direct offers delivery to SHSU faculty members of articles and books that the Library holds.
Faculty members are encouraged to recommend materials to be added to the library collection. Materials recommended to support the instructional program of the university will be given first priority.

Section Three: Additional Information
Plagiarism Prevention (Turn-it-in, SafeAssign)
Turnitin and SafeAssign are an intellectual property verification tool that checks a submitted paper against a comprehensive database of source materials to determine how much of the paper is original, and flag text identified as closely matching other internet, article, or other information sources. SHSU Online provides more information about these resources.
