NOTICE: Due to COVID-19 response measures, the library building is closed until further notice. We will continue to provide services through mailing and virtual reference help.

The Ask-a-Librarian live chat service is open! Hours are 8am - 9pm on Mon-Thurs, and 8am - 5pm on Fri.

Due Dates of Checked-out Materials

Checkouts from the Spring 2020 semester are currently due May 28. Students enrolled for the Summer semester may renew these materials to a new due date of June 26, and this same date will apply to any new materials checked out for Summer I. Faculty and staff may renew existing checkouts and checkout new material with a due date of Aug 17.

Returning Materials

The preferred method to return materials to NGL is by mail. This may be done via USPS (for a shipping cost) or via KatPost (for free).

You may return via USPS library book rate with tracking to the following address: (Please write "Campus Box" or "SHSU Box", NOT PO Box)

Interlibrary Services
Newton Gresham Library
Sam Houston State University
Campus Box 2179
Huntsville, TX 77341

You may also drop off a package labeled with this address at KatPost on Sam Houston Avenue, and it will be delivered via Campus Mail at no cost.

Outside book drop is open at the northeast corner of the building (on the patio above the stairs from the parking lot.) However, we ask that patrons prioritize the two mail options above for most returns, as it allows better sanitization measures during this pandemic. In any case, materials borrowed from other libraries via ILL should not be returned to book drops; these items must be returned via USPS or KatPost.

Checking Out Materials

Library materials may be checked out by mail using Distance Learning Services. Please see below. Additional limited-contact pickup options may become available during Summer 2020; please watch this page for updates after library staff are able to return to the building.

Distance Learning Services

All SHSU students are now considered distance education students and are eligible for distance learning services for the remainder of the Spring semester. This means that you can have books and print materials sent to your homes, can mail materials back to NGL, and can request scans of articles or chapters be sent to you.

This service is provided by the Interlibrary Services and requests are made through ILLiad. Instructions on how to request materials through Distance Learning Services are available.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

All fees and late fines are waived for all ILL materials, and those materials can be shipped to your home address. Materials borrowed from other libraries via ILL should not be returned to book drops; these items must be returned via USPS or KatPost.

Please bear with ILL staffs as they process requests for your items. Currently, many Universities and Libraries are scaling back their staff presences due to COVID-19. This is causing a delayed response time to orders and some items may be unavailable completely. We will continue to work with you to get you the research you need.

Library Instruction

All in-person classroom instructions have been suspended. Instead, we will provide virtual library instruction sessions or embedded librarian service for Blackboard in order to suit instructors' online course needs. Just ask your subject librarian.

Free Instructional Materials

Some publishers/vendors have made their instructional materials available for free to help moving courses online. We have put together a list of online (free) resources for instructional needs.
