Both provide summaries of the lives and careers of composers, performers, and theorists. Also contains illustrated descriptions of musical instruments, entries that identify operas, oratorios, symphonic poems, and other works. Contains definitions of musical terms.

International bibliography of scholarly writings, in 202 languages, on music and related disciplines are indexed. RILM is classified by topic, and contains original-language titles, title translations into English, and abstracts in English. Contains full bibliographic information for citation purposes.
