Considered by many to be the standard English language encyclopedia on music. A multi-volume scholarly work that contains articles and bibliographies on many aspects of music including notation, biography, genre, and world music. An essential resource for term papers in music history and symphonic literature.

Biographical information on musicians in many different genres including classical, jazz, rock, and blues.

A dictionary of musical terms in the major musical languages.

The Harvard Concise Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Located in the Reference Collection. Call number: REF ML100.H36 1999

The Oxford Dictionary of Music. Located in the Reference Collection. REF ML100.K35 2012.

Both provide summaries of the lives and careers of composers, performers, and theorists. Also contains illustrated descriptions of musical instruments, entries that identify operas, oratorios, symphonic poems, and other works. Contains definitions of musical terms.

RILM Abstracts of Music Literature. Located in the Reference Collection. Call number: REF ML118.R4.

International bibliography of scholarly writings, in 202 languages, on music and related disciplines are indexed. RILM is classified by topic, and contains original-language titles, title translations into English, and abstracts in English. Contains full bibliographic information for citation purposes. Contains a thesaurus and author, journal, and subject indexes.
