Sam Houston State University Archives

Archives occupies the northwest corner of the 4th floor of Gresham Library adjoining the Thomason Room. The earliest materials preserved are bulletins from the beginning of Sam Houston Normal Institute (1879) and presidential papers beginning in 1909. It contains everything from "The Acalde Yearbook", class photographs, bulletins and announcements from 1879 to the present, administrative records, and various school memorabilia.

In addition to university material, personal collections of faculty members-notably the Clark Papers-are also included. J.L. Clark was a history professor at Sam Houston State University from 1910-1951. He was known as, "Mr. Sam Houston". A local historian and champion of civil rights, Dr. Clark collected materials that he deemed historic to the history of Sam Houston State Teachers College and the State of Texas. This collection contains many different items from files dealing with the Texas Centennial to photographs taken at the Huntsville prisoner of war camp in WWII.

Another major component of Archives is the SHSU Collection, a collection of books, articles, and various materials written by professors, students, or persons associated in some way with Sam Houston State University over the years. An example would be items written by alumnus Dan Rather or Dr. James Olson, Head of the History Department. These materials are listed in the SamCat library catalog with a suffix call number starting with SHSU.
